Backpacking First Aid - Dogs

April 27, 2023

When going on a backpacking trip with your furry friend, it's essential to be prepared for any emergencies that may arise. One of the most important things you can do is to pack a first aid kit specifically designed for dogs. Here are some tips on how to prepare a first aid kit and what to do in case of an emergency. Of course, you can always prepare your own or make some modifications to your own first aid kit!

First aid kit

Your dog's first aid kit should contain the following items:

  1. Tweezers: to remove splinters or ticks.

  2. Scissors: to cut gauze or bandages.

  3. Sterile gauze pads: to cover wounds.

  4. Adhesive tape: to secure gauze or bandages.

  5. Antiseptic wipes: to clean wounds.

  6. Antibacterial ointment: to apply to wounds.

  7. Hydrogen peroxide: to induce vomiting if your dog ingests something poisonous (only to be used under the guidance of a veterinarian).

  8. Oral syringe: to administer medication or water.

  9. Self-adhesive bandage: to wrap around sprains or strains.

  10. Emergency blanket: to keep your dog warm.

  11. Tick and flea treatment: to protect against parasites.

  12. Leash and muzzle: to keep your dog secure and prevent them from biting.

  13. Contact information: write down your veterinarian's name and phone number, as well as the contact information for any emergency veterinary clinics in the area.

  14. Stypic powder: Useful to stop bleeding, especially in cases of ripped toenails while on the trail.

Injured dog

If your dog is injured or becomes sick while backpacking, there are a few things you can do to help:

  1. Stay calm: Dogs can sense when their owners are anxious or upset, which can make them more anxious themselves. Staying calm will help to keep your dog calm as well.

  2. Assess the situation: Determine the severity of the injury or illness. If it's a minor injury, use the items in your first aid kit to treat the wound. If it's a more serious injury, seek veterinary care immediately.

  3. Provide first aid: Use the items in your first aid kit to treat the injury or illness as best you can. For example, if your dog has a cut, clean the wound with antiseptic wipes, apply antibacterial ointment, and cover the wound with a sterile gauze pad.

  4. Contact a veterinarian: If the injury or illness is serious, contact a veterinarian as soon as possible. If you're in a remote area without cellphone reception, consider using a satellite phone or a personal locator beacon to call for help.

  5. Transport your dog: If your dog is unable to walk, you may need to carry them out of the wilderness. Use a self-adhesive bandage to wrap around any sprains or strains, and use an emergency blanket to keep your dog warm.

Backpacking with your dog can be a wonderful experience, but it's important to be prepared for any emergencies that may arise. By packing a first aid kit specifically designed for dogs and knowing what to do in case of an emergency, you can ensure that your furry friend stays safe and healthy on your outdoor adventure!
