Situated in the picturesque North Cascades National Park on the shore of Diablo Lake, this destination offers a wilderness experience like no other. Although this destination is only accessible by small boat, it offers the unique experience of near complete solitude. Especially if you are lucky enough to be the only reservation to arrive.

Location and Accessibility

Thunder Point is a gem nestled in the North Cascades National Park, which is located in the northern part of Washington State. The park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, boasting a stunning mix of alpine lakes, towering peaks, lush forests, and pristine wilderness. To reach Thunder Point, you'll first need to make your way to Colonial Creek South Campground. Here you will find a boat launch that can handle paddle craft and is a popular summer spot for swimming and other day use activities. Due to lower lake levels and large amounts of sediment surrounding the boat launch, you are typically limited to any boats you can carry to the water. Be warned however, this area and Ross Lake can be very windy! Especially in the afternoon. This can make it difficult to maneuver and there are often many boating accidents throughout the year. Be aware of your skill level and the wind conditions of your trip.

Once you arrive at Thunder Point, you'll find a serene and isolated camping area surrounded by the rugged beauty of the North Cascades. Thunder Point offers a unique backcountry camping experience, which means there are no facilities or designated campsites. Campers must practice Leave No Trace principles, and be self-sufficient in terms of water, food, and waste disposal.

Here are a few key things to keep in mind:

  1. Permits: Camping at Thunder Point requires a free, self-issue backcountry camping permit, which can be obtained at the Wilderness Information Center in Marblemount or at various trailheads throughout the park. Permits are essential to limit the impact on this pristine environment.

  2. Campfires: Campfires are generally permitted as long as there is not a burn ban. Typically these take place fairly quickly as the area dries out fast when there is a lack of rainfall as in recent years. Be sure to check on regulations before your trip!

  3. Wildlife: The North Cascades are home to a diverse range of wildlife, including black bears, mountain goats, and marmots. Proper food storage is crucial to prevent conflicts with animals. Most (if not all) of these sites have bear storage boxes, so there is generally no need to hang from trees. Be sure to keep any scented items in there and keep them locked inside unless actively in use.

  4. Water: You'll need to filter or purify water from the lake. Plan ahead and bring a reliable water treatment system to ensure safe drinking water.

  5. Leave No Trace: Respect the natural environment by packing out all trash, following established trails, and leaving the wilderness as you found it.

Activities at Thunder Point

The magic of Thunder Point doesn't just stop at camping; there's a myriad of outdoor activities to keep you engaged and exhilarated throughout your stay:

  1. Hiking: In addition to the Diablo Lake Trail, which leads to Thunder Point, the area is a gateway to an extensive network of trails, such as the Thunder Creek Trail and the North Cascades Highway. Although trails are not directly accessible from this campsite, they are available if you paddle out.

  2. Kayaking and Canoeing: Diablo Lake's vibrant turquoise waters beckon kayakers and canoers to explore its serene beauty. This comes in handy as you likely arrived in one or more!

  3. Photography: The breathtaking scenery at Thunder Point is a photographer's dream. Capture the captivating views of Diablo Lake, surrounding peaks, and the vibrant flora and fauna that make this place so special.

  4. Stargazing: The North Cascades National Park is recognized as a Dark Sky Park, which means it's ideal for stargazing. On clear nights, the starry spectacle is nothing short of mesmerizing.

Camping at Thunder Point on Diablo Lake is an opportunity to connect with nature in one of the most enchanting settings the North Cascades have to offer. This outdoor experience is not for the faint of heart, but for those willing to invest in the spirit of adventure, it promises a truly remarkable journey. I wholeheartedly recommend Thunder Point to anyone seeking the wild, rugged beauty of the Pacific Northwest without the hassles of a major backpacking trip. Remember to prepare for your trip by obtaining the necessary permits, respecting the environment, and embracing the opportunity to reconnect with the natural world. Thunder Point will not only provide lifelong memories but also foster a deep appreciation for the awe-inspiring wonders of the wilderness.
